Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 1882-1945.  32nd President of the United States, 1933-1945.  Large format formal portrait photograph inscribed and signed For George Hibbard from his friend  /  Franklin D. Roosevelt.

This is a beautiful 9¾" x 13¼" profile portrait of FDR by Harris & Ewing of Washington, D.C., for years the official presidential photographers.

Roosevelt was elected Governor of New York twice, in 1928 and 1930.  His election was a political comeback against considerable odds.  Roosevelt served two terms in the New York Senate before President Woodrow Wilson appointed him Assistant Secretary of the Navy in 1913, a job Roosevelt held for seven years.  In 1920, Roosevelt ran for vice president with Democratic presidential nominee James M. Cox but lost to the Republicans in the general election.

Disaster struck Roosevelt in 1921 when he contracted poliomyelitis on a trip with prominent supporters of the Boy Scout Foundation to visit the summer camp at Bear Mountain on July 28.  He felt continually more tired each day after the trip. On August 9, while vacationing at Campobello Island, New Brunswick, he began to experience pain and loss of function in his legs.  Despite his courageous efforts to overcome the crippling illness, he never really regained use of his atrophied legs. While Roosevelt struggled with rehabilitation, his wife, Eleanor, helped to keep him in the public eye by becoming more politically active herself.  She participated in the League of Women Voters, joined the Women's Trade Union League, and worked for the Women's Division of the New York State Democratic Committee.  Her efforts paid off, and Roosevelt was elected Governor of New York.

In 1932, with the nation mired in the darkest days of the Great Depression, Roosevelt was elected President of the United States.  He told Americans that "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself."  FDR saw the nation through the Great Depression and World War II.  The exigencies of war led to his unprecedented elections to third and fourth terms in 1940 and 1944.

Historians rank Roosevelt among the top five American presidents.

Roosevelt has inscribed and signed this photograph in the margin below his image.  There is typical light silvering to the image.  The color gradation is an original part of the photo, not the result of framing.  The photo is mounted on heavy board, which has a couple of tape remnants on the reverse, not affecting the photograph itself.  The piece is in very fine to extra fine condition overall and would be beautiful in a framed display.

Unframed.  Please ask us about custom framing this piece.
